Steuben Glass

Since 1903, Steuben Glass has been made by hand at our Corning, New York factory. Our unique glass is made from an outstanding optical formula. Steuben's state-of-the-art melting ensures glass that is exceptionally pure and free of even the tiniest visual imperfections. Our skilled artisans work in teams around reheating ovens called glory holes, directed by a master "gaffer." Each gather of molten glass is carried from tank to glory hole, where it is formed "at the fire" with blowpipes, pontil rods, shears, calipers, and other tools little changed over centuries. Finished pieces are slowly cooled in annealing ovens, then cut, polished, and engraved by hand. Each example is minutely inspected before it is signed with a diamond-tipped pen. Imperfect items are destroyed. There are no seconds at Steuben.

Steuben Glass has built its superior reputation on a promise of innovative design. We proudly introduce a wide selection of new works by our talented staff designers each year, as well as many that are a result of artistic collaborations between Steuben and the master architects, designers, and artists. Again and again, the designers explore the fluid brilliance and light inherent in Steuben, working closely with our glassmakers to achieve a singular creative expression.

There are two major categories of vintage Steuben glass. The first group -- known as "Carder Glass" or "Carder Steuben" -- includes the many types of colored, cased, cut, and acid-etched glass designed by Steuben's cofounder Frederick Carder in the years between 1903 and 1933. The second category of vintage Steuben embraces the flawlessly pure, color-free crystal -- often copper-wheel engraved -- made at Steuben in the decades following 1933, after Arthur Amory Houghton, Jr. took Carder's place at the company's helm. At this time, Steuben.com is offering only examples of the first category (colored Carder-era glass).
